Community empowerment is the process of enabling people to shape and choose the services they use on a personal basis, so that they can influence the way those services are delivered. It is often used in the same context as community engagement, which refers to the practical techniques of involving local people in local decisions and especially reaching out to those who feel distanced from public decisions.
What is community empowerment
Community Empowerment is about people and government/private sector, working together to make life better. It involves more people being able to influence decisions about their communities, and more people taking responsibility for tackling local problems, rather than expecting others to.
The idea is that government/public sector can't solve everything by itself, and nor can the community: it's better when we work together.
There are three key ingredients to community empowerment:
- Active citizens: people with the motivation, skills and confidence to speak up for their communities and say what improvements are needed.
- Strengthened communities: community groups with the capability and resources to bring people together to work out shared solutions.
- Partnership with public bodies: public bodies willing and able to work as partners with local people.
Literasi Maya & Masjid Portal
We are focusing on two community services. Our "Literasi Maya" or "Digital Literation" is mainly aimed for all type of local people who faced a huge gap of general education and knowledge in internet. We are concerned with the lack of input in internet knowledge based when the world around us is moving fast towards new technologies every second. Culturally, knowing our local community especially people living in rural area, they are very backward in terms of learning new things or knowledge and shy to come forward to show their interest. With our “Literasi Maya” program, we step forward to them and giving first-hand knowledge and face-to-face approach in exposing and educating them basic understanding on how to manipulate information in the world of internet for daily usage. Masjid Portal is dedicated to gather all mosques in Malaysia with individual Portal complete with information and activities. The main objective is to bring the community closer and to increase their interest and participation with each of their local mosque.
